With the plastic crisis currently accumulating to almost 9 million tonnes of plastic waste in the Earth’s oceans, the Better with Less competition aims to challenge the packaging world to produce new solutions.

Made up of four categories: cosmetics, e-commerce, food packaging and a ‘wild card’ category, the competition is open to both professional packaging designers and packaging design students.

Chairman of the competition, Ilkka Harju, packaging services director for EMEA and APAC at Metsä Board, comments: “We need to challenge the packaging world with new solutions – new ways of thinking and new innovations.

“This competition is all about lessening the environmental impact without compromising brand experiences. We aim to help advance innovation and sustainable packaging design throughout the world.”

Harju will be joined by a jury of packaging design experts including Alissa Demorest, chief editor of luxury packaging magazine Formes de Luxe; Clark Goolsby, chief creative officer of Chase Design Group; and Stefan Junge, professor in Packaging Technology at Beuth University of Applied Sciences, Berlin – amongst others.

The first prize for the design challenge is €7,000 (£6,300), the second prize is €2,000 (£1,811) and the third prize is €1,000 (£905). One design student will also be given the opportunity of an internship with Metsä Board’s packaging design team at its Excellence Centre in Äänekoski, Finland.

Submissions are open until January 20th with the winners due to be announced in spring 2020.
