Industry members join in alliance

A new “industry alliance” has been formed to encourage increased and continued use of fibre-based packaging to minimise climate and environmental impact.

The alliance aims to raise awareness of the environmental benefits of fibre-based packaging

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Board Group along with other members of the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) founded the alliance, named 4evergreen.

The initiative is described as a forum to engage and connect industry members involved in every aspect of the packaging chain. This includes paper and board producers, packaging converters, brand-owners and retailers, technology and material suppliers, and even those involved in the sorting and collecting of waste.

Some of 4evergreen’s first members include Nestlé, Smurfit Kappa, Sappi, UPM, International Paper, Tetra Pak, Schur Group, Kotkamills, and more. The group encourages more organisations to join the alliance.

Extensive, global collaboration is essential in promoting circular economy and combating climate change

Commenting on the initiative, Mika Joukio, chief executive officer of Metsä Board, says: “Extensive, global collaboration is essential in promoting circular economy and combating climate change.

“Together we can utilise the full potential of fibre-based packaging and provide solutions based on renewable raw materials for packaging of the future.”

As well as increasing awareness of the benefits of fibre-based packaging materials, the group will work to advocate for EU legislation, support product design for recyclability, and will also campaign for better collection systems and recycling infrastructures.
