Hobs in Abingdon is the first branch of printing company Hobs Repro to install a Fastbind PUR/EVA XT binder from Ashgate Automation.

It is the first Fastbind upgrade for Hobs Abingdon for nine years

The table-top binder is unique compared with traditional PUR binders because it provides PUR and EVA melt glue for soft and hard cover binding in one machine, using a choice of interchangeable cartridges.

The new machine has a system for roughing the papers and self-adjusts for book thickness from 1-1000 pages. The applicator, which has large handles, glides over the book block with almost no resistance and there is an electronic adjustable temperature control with single operation when switching between glue types.

It was an easy upgrade for the staff who had been using the Elite XT. Although we have kept the Elite machine, we tend now to put all our binding through the PUR/EVA because the quality is better

All Hobs’ branches have a Fastbind Elite XT EVA binder, with the Abingdon store having used its binder for nine years. Simon Davie, business manager at Hobs explains how the firm started to look for a PUR solution as the company prints and binds hard back books, high end proofs and manuscripts for a local publisher. He says: “The PUR/EVA met all our requirements. We also use it in conjunction with the Fastbind Casematic casemaker.

“It was an easy upgrade for the staff who had been using the Elite XT. Although we have kept the Elite machine, we tend now to put all our binding through the PUR/EVA because the quality is better.”

Ashgate Automation offers demonstrations of Fastbind systems in its 1600 sq ft showroom, which is something that was beneficial to Hobs Abingdon’s newer staff members when transitioning to the newer binder.
