The national daily title, which was founded by John Edward Taylor, was first published on May 5th, 1821 as the Manchester Guardian.

The newspaper which is owned by Guardian Media Group (GMG) was renamed The Guardian in 1959. The title’s sister papers, The Observer and The Guardian Weekly are both owned by GMG.

The Scott Trust, which is the owner of GMG was created in 1936 to secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian. The trust became a limited company in 2008 but the same protections still apply with profits going to journalism rather than shareholders and owners.

To celebrate the mammoth anniversary, The Guardian will host a digital festival of live events and masterclasses, special digital and print pieces, and a campaign featuring the slogan “200 years a work in progress”.

...thanks to the support and trust of Guardian readers we now have greater impact and are read around the world like never before

From yesterday (March 5th), the paper will examine its origins, the highs and lows, and the impact of its investigations from over the years through print, digital, audio and video formats.

Katherine Viner, editor-in-chief of Guardian News & Media, says: “200 years is a long time for any organisation to last, but thanks to the support and trust of Guardian readers we now have greater impact and are read around the world like never before.

“We are looking forward to celebrating this moment with Guardian readers and supporters – bringing them special journalism and events which look back at our history, and forward to the future.”

According to GMG, The Guardian received over 530,000 single contributions from readers and including print subscribers, the organisation was supported over 1.5m times last year.
