The team at paperboard producer, Metsä Board, has put their creative heads together and produced a recyclable packaging solution for a Vodka brand.

Family-owned distillery, Podlaska Wytwórnia Wódek “Polmos”, wanted packaging for its Chopin Vodka brand which conveyed the brand’s organic ethos.

Joanna Dolinczyk, marketing coordinator of Chopin Vodka Brand describes the vision for the packaging as encompassing three main goals: purity, whiteness, and simplicity.

To do this, Metsä Board opted for a sleek white colour palate which was produced using a protective F-flute made up of layers of lightweight Metsä Board Natural WKL Bright White kraftliner. This substrate is produced at Metsä Board’s Husum mill and its fresh fibres are 100% traceable to sustainably managed Northern European forests.

In line with the brief for ecological packaging, the design also features low migration inks with water-based varnishing, and no glue.

Instead the packaging was designed to be robust and lightweight using a locking flaps structure. These features also mean that the packaging is safe and easy to recycle.

Iiro Numminen, Structural Packaging Designer, Metsä Board, explains: “The packaging communicates the brand’s promise to the consumer in every way. Easy recyclability was also a factor in the design concept as the importance of circular economy is paramount.”

Metsä Board designed and tested the packaging at its Excellence Centre which was opened in Äänekoski in September last year.

The centre houses the latest technology for research and development, packaging design and paperboard and packaging performance all under one roof, creating a collaborative environment.
