Spreadshirt brings embroidery online

In 2019, e-commerce company, Spreadshirt Create-Your-Own – which is part of the Spread Group - pledged to rapidly expand its range of products and printing techniques and expand into new markets.

Spreadshirt has identified potential in the online embroidery market

As a result of this, Spreadshirt has invested $10m (£7m) on capital expenditure over the last two years, growing its fleet of print machinery to be able to offer additional services.

This included the addition of Atlas printers from Kornit to Spreadshirt’s US production sites in Henderson, Nevada and Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

When Spreadshirt set out its growth plans in 2019, embroidery accounted for 40% of the total customised apparel market, however it is still very much an offline-oriented market today.

Recognising the potential for embroidered products on the online market, the company is investing in the growing sector and now offers embroidery in all of its European markets.

Tobias Beutel, director of personalisation services at Spreadshirt Create-Your-Own, says: “Embroidery not only looks classy due to its vibrant appearance, but also convinces in terms of enormous durability. The finishing allows washing fabrics of up to 60°C and is just as durable as the clothing itself.”

The Spread Group is made up of five brands: Spreadshirt Create-Your-Own, Spreadshirt Marketplace, Spreadshop. Teamshirts, and SPOD.

At the Spread Group’s site in Leipzig, the research and development team has been testing the versatility and functionality of embroidery over the last few months.

The e-commerce brand already offers 50 products including hoodies, polo shirts, caps, and aprons which can be embroidered with custom text. It is now working to expand this offering by adding fleece jackets and workwear to the range, with additional gift items such as custom towels and bathrobes also in the pipeline.

According to Spreadshirt, embroidered products are particularly popular in the business customer sectors such as company logos and slogans for catering, events, and customer service businesses.

To put this plan into motion, the company has invested in Tajima automated embroidery machines which were first put into action last month in its recently opened production site in Legnica, Poland. The machines will soon also be installed in Spread Group’s facilities in the US.

Beutel adds: “As a successful e-commerce platform, we want to mix this up and transfer embroidery into the online world with a versatile product selection and attractive pricing.”
