Packaging a lifeline for business during pandemic

After the pandemic hit the hospitality and retail sectors hard, two print businesses which served these markets joined forces, diversified into new markets, and are bouncing back.

According to Mercia Image Print, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, demand for promotional print for the hospitality and retail sector disappeared.

Managing director Amanda Strong describes how the firm had to “juggle furlough with production” and diversify by finding new products to keep business going.

One market which provided a lifeline for Mercia was product packaging and the firm secured large orders for Rapid Flow Testing kits and online retail packaging.

After further diversifying into the packaging sector, Mercia was approached by The Print & Design Factory and the two firms merged in October 2020.

We are delighted to welcome Mercia to our Group and look forward to maintaining and building on Mercia’s reputation as the leading print provider in Derby

As a result of the merger, Mercia gained access to an additional print team, more print presses and the ability to provide digital, B3, B2 and B1 litho printing.

Strong has been at the head of Mercia for over 30 years and she describes the sale of the company as an emotional one, having started the business in a bedroom in Derby.

Craig Ikin, group commercial director of The Print & Design Factory says: “We are delighted to welcome Mercia to our Group and look forward to maintaining and building on Mercia’s reputation as the leading print provider in Derby.”
