Two Sides continues fight against greenwashing

The graphics initiative has targeted the likes of Dropbox due to its misleading statements

Two Sides is tackling greenwashing due to the impact it has on the paper and graphics industries

After being “flooded” with complaints from around the globe, Two Sides has urged its members to write to Dropbox after it sent out a mass email making unsubstantiated anti-paper claims.

As a digital service which allows users to store, share, and transfer files, Dropbox has almost 17 million paying customers, along with millions who use it for free.

The company has recently made statements such as “less paper = more tress” encouraging users to “do their part for the planet” and “secure the future of forests” to promote its service.

In order to support the paper, print, and mail sectors, Two Sides has hit out against the claims, stating that information like this is affecting millions of people and businesses throughout the globe, while also adding to misconceptions of paper’s environmental sustainability.

Recently Two Sides has published a series of news that supports the growth of print and sustainable products such as paper, which could all see a resurgence as restrictions and clamp downs limit digital alternatives.

Two Sides recently celebrated the success of its greenwash campaign, claiming to have pressed over 880 companies to remove misleading anti-paper statements.

Many of the organisations we engage are surprised to learn that European forests have actually been growing by 1,500 football pitches every day.

Two Sides Europe managing director Jonathan Tame, says: “Not only are these greenwash claims in breach of established environmental marketing rules, but they are hugely damaging to an industry which has a solid and continually improving environmental record.

“Far from ‘saving trees,’ a healthy market for forest products such as paper encourages the long-term growth of forests through sustainable forest management. Many of the organisations we engage are surprised to learn that European forests have actually been growing by 1,500 football pitches every day.”

Running its anti-greenwash campaign since 2010, Two Sides has engaged with over 1,900 organisations, and has led to the removal of statements from businesses throughout Europe, the Americas, and Australasia.

Tame says: “It remains vital that greenwash is challenged to ensure that the industry’s great environmental record is recognised and that the livelihoods of thousands of industry employees, as well as print, paper, and postage volumes are not damaged by the spread of misleading and opportunistic greenwash marketing.”
