Alussa is an inkjet printing solution for genuine leather products

Agfa specialises in inkjet printers, inks and software whilst TFL specialises in custom-developed coating chemistry.

Alussa is believed to be the first industrial inkjet solution for decorated leather capable of up to 100,000 flexes and productivity of up to 80sq m per hour.

Tom Cloots, director of Industrial Inkjet at Agfa, paints a picture of why a solution such as this was needed: “Printing images on leather using inkjet technology, and obtaining top performance in terms of flexibility and scratch resistance, is a complex challenge.

“The Alussa leather printing solution incorporates both Agfa’s vast expertise in the field of inkjet technology, graphic workflow and colour management, and TFL’s in-depth knowledge of coating chemistry and coating application techniques. It combines the best of two worlds to provide a perfect synergy between leather and ink.”

...it seems like the speed of modification and the desire for individualisation is increasing year by year. This is a big challenge and opportunity for the leather industry

The ability to print both white and full colour designs with “photographic quality” on different types of leather also opens up the doors to customisation and personalisation.

Alussa is also beneficial to the environment as it can be used to create one-off products and samples and provides a solution to mass production.

Markus Hess, global head of product marketing for TFL adds: “Fashion trends are changing fast and it seems like the speed of modification and the desire for individualisation is increasing year by year. This is a big challenge and opportunity for the leather industry.

“Together we can create countless, customised fashion effects combined with high flexing and wearing properties to meet the rapidly changing demands of today’s fashion industry.”
