Canon was appointed as the Official Imaging Supporter on August 25th, 2021

With a broad history of supporting large sporting events such as the Rugby World Cup, Canon continued in its mission to show the best of its imaging, medical, and printing services at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Canon provided dedicated on-site printing services, including hardware, software, and on-site support to help event organisers and venues in providing memorable fan experiences.

The partnership saw Canon embrace the Commonwealth games with a variety of trips, experiences, and competitions that complemented its participation in the athletics competition.
The past 12 days have been a whirlwind of pride, celebration and excitement and as the Official Imaging Supporter of the Games we’d like to congratulate all of the athletes on their incredible performances
Print Monthly was lucky enough to attend the games as a Canon guest where we were able to see the full impact that print had on the games, as well as the importance of the event taking place in Birmingham.

With a rich history of manufacturing and growth in industrial sectors, Birmingham hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games was a big surge for the ‘second city of the United Kingdom’. Locals and businesses felt proud of the city, and the many trademarks of Birmingham.

Spectators of the events could purchase expertly printed souvenir programmes, which complemented the likes of flags and banners that made Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium pop with colour.

Head of commercial print at Canon UK, Stuart Rising, who attended the games said: “As you looked around the event there was huge amounts of signage and graphics, with a large proportion of that being either directly or indirectly printed on Canon technology through a variety of partners that we work with to facilitate that type of output.”

With Canon providing photographers and broadcasters with support via its array of imaging solutions, Canon complemented the partnership with the likes of interactive photo booths, papercrafts, and photography competitions for university students and school pupils.

Perry was the mascot for the games, reflecting Birmingham’s association with the Bull

Brand and sponsorship senior manager at Canon Europe, Peter Morris, commented: “We’re very proud that our imaging technology helped fans to immerse themselves in the sporting action at this summer’s Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Supporting world-class sport events is very much part of our heritage as we used these exciting activations to help ensure a world-class experience for those attending this historic sporting event.”

The games and Canon UK sites were peppered with hundreds of cut outs of the official mascot, Perry the Bull, which were printed using Canon Arizona technology.

In a social media post reflecting on the games Canon EMEA said: “The past 12 days have been a whirlwind of pride, celebration and excitement and as the Official Imaging Supporter of the Games we’d like to congratulate all of the athletes on their incredible performances!”
