The Antalis Smart Packaging Centre now houses three new machines from TLS

The Antalis Packaging division of Antalis has strengthened the technology line-up at its Smart Packaging Centre (SPC), adding a burst test device and two new corrugate-testing machines.

Located in Leicestershire, the SPC provides Antalis customers the opportunity to discuss their packaging requirements and see packaging automation in action. Those who visit the site can also learn more about opportunities to develop packaging design solutions and create samples.

With the new kit, Antalis says this will help customers to further evaluate current or new packaging solutions.

New machinery comprises a TLS Samples Crush Tester CDM-5, which can perform various tests such as ring crush, edge crush and flat crush testing. Meanwhile, the TLS Validator Plus-50 compression machine tests corrugated boxes and other materials up to a pressure of 50kN.

In addition, the TLS Bursting Strength Tester Mullen BT-10 allows users to assess how much pressure a cardboard box - or other paper material - can withstand before failing.

John Garner, head of sustainability, innovation and design for packaging at Antalis, says: “We are able to use the data the new testing equipment provides to develop alternative material proposals for customers that offer the same or better performance values than their existing packaging.

“For example, we were able to redesign one customer’s corrugated boxes to use 35% less material. It’s a great result all round because, as well as offering a potential price benefit, we are significantly reducing the amount of resources required in the manufacture, distribution and storage of these products, as well as making recycling at the end of life phase easier.”
