Paper shortage a ‘grave threat’ to industry

The BPIF has joined European associations asking for the end of strikes that are causing paper shortages in the print industry.

Joining print trade body Intergraf and self-adhesives association FINAT, the BPIF and BPIF Labels have called on the end of ongoing strikes at UPM in Finland, which began industrial action at the start of the year.

Strikes are due to continue until at least March 12th and have already had a huge impact on the lack of paper on European markets. Due to this, associations worry the problem will only get worse.

FINAT has warned that a delay in label production could have serious ramifications on the supply of food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals.

Intergraf has therefore written to the European Commission to highlight the tight supply situation, which has only worsened due to the costs of energy and raw materials.

We will be raising this matter with the UK Government in the coming days to ensure that they are aware of, and understand the seriousness, of the situation and its impact on consumers.

Charles Jarrold, BPIF chief executive says: “A shortage of paper is a grave threat to our supply chains and ultimately to the products available for customers.

“As part of Intergraf we strongly urge a resolution to the UPM strike, and we support the raising of the wider issues with the Commission. This instance shows that although we are no longer part of the EU, our domestic industry is greatly affected by Europe, and our work with Intergraf is as important as ever.”

The strike action at Finnish paper mills could hit time-sensitive printed matter the most, such as newspapers, magazines, books, and advertising.

Jarrold adds: “We will also be raising this matter with the UK Government in the coming days to ensure that they are aware of, and understand the seriousness, of the situation and its impact on consumers.”
