Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day

Domino Printing Sciences has highlighted the key role women play in its technical roles

Today (June 23rd, 2022) celebrates International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), a day highlighted by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to enable the celebration of women in engineering to become global.

This year marks the 9th year the day has been celebrated, after being set up in 2014 by the WES to celebrate its 95th anniversary.  

Domino which is a specialist in coding, marking, and digital printing technologies, has recognised the vital role of its female employees in key technical roles. 

The company says it welcomes the annual campaign as it shares its vision of highlighting the rewarding careers available in STEM subjects, that have been historically more popular with boys.

WES reports figures as of June 2021 showed that 16.5% of engineers in the industry are women. To help increase this figure, the theme of this year’s event is ‘Investors & Innovators’, which celebrates the amazing work by female engineers who are helping “to build towards a brighter future”.

Female employees at Domino have spoken about their experiences in the industry and how Domino has supported them in choosing a career in engineering, technology, operations, and/ or product development.

Natasha Jeremic, digital printing ink development manager at Domino, says: “In my current role I enjoy watching our inks start their lives as an early-stage concept and then improving, evolving, and progressing until they graduate into the fully commercialised products that serve our customers and solve some practical issues for them.

“We need to change perception for engineering that it is a man’s world as it would be nothing without women.”

Jeremic studied a degree in organic chemical technology and polymer engineering followed by a PhD in chemical engineering. 

Mariam Khalfey, who is a data product owner at the company, says: “I was interested in science at school and went on to study chemistry and molecular physics at university which set me up perfectly for becoming a chemist at Domino. I love my job because it’s varied, and every day is different.

“As a company, I’ve found that Domino is incredibly supportive of career development and progression, always finding exciting opportunities such as collaborations with external bodies, or with other departments within the business.”

Group programme director, Dr Josie Harries, adds: “An important and enjoyable part of my job is coming up with new concepts and ideas to improve the business’s capabilities.”

WES is encouraging businesses and the public to tag them on social media @INWED1919 and adding the hashtag #INWED22. 

Rachel Hurst, chief operating officer at Domino concludes: “The annual International Women in Engineering Day shines a light on successful female role models at different career stages to inspire more women and girls to believe they can do it too.

“I trained in manufacturing engineering as I like problem-solving and feel good about making a difference... Engineering doesn’t have to be male dominated and companies need to do more to be inclusive and inspire women to develop in technical subject areas.”
