Soyang Europe introduces new paper-based DTF film

Metsä Board has shut down one of its major mills in Finland today, which employed over 190 people and was first established in 1865
Production at the Tako board mill of paperboard manufacturer, Metsä Board, has ended as of today (June 17th) when the mill’s BM1 board machine was shut down.
Metsä Board first announced the decision to close the Tako mill in Tampere, Finland, in March 2025, as part of efforts to improve the company’s profitability and cost competitiveness. The mill was first established in 1865, with the mill’s red brick façade remaining a visible part of the city’s industrial heritage.
Since the decision, Metsä Board has supported the re-employment of the mill’s 191 employees through a support programme, including internal recruitment days in cooperation with other Metsä Group mills, collaboration with employment authorities, and re-employment training and coaching.
At the time of production shutdown, 95 employees had already found new jobs.
Production of Tako’s products has been transferred to Metsä Board’s Kyro mill, with customer deliveries set to continue without interruption.
Following the end of production, cleaning work and preparations for dismantling the production equipment inside the mill have begun. The dismantling of machines and production equipment is planned to take place during 2026 with machines, equipment, pipes, and tanks emptied and cleaned by the end of 2025.
The process of obtaining a building permit for dismantling the external equipment from outside the building has also been initiated. The future use of the property has not yet been determined.
Timo Ahonen, who was vice president of the Tako Board mill, says: “The decision to close the mill has been a difficult one, and we have aimed to support our personnel in the best possible way during this transition.
“For example, internal recruitment days have helped Tako employees find new roles within Metsä Group. We still hope that more job opportunities will be found, depending on individuals' ability to relocate.”
Speaking about the work of Tako Mill’s personnel during the shutdown, Ahonen adds: “The mill’s production has been run down responsibly and with high quality.
“This accomplishment is thanks to the personnel, who have demonstrated exceptional professionalism despite the difficult situation. Tako is known for its strong 'Tako spirit', which has been evident in the work commitment, right up to the final days of production.”
