Pureprint Group has announced the passing of its colleague, Sam Adams, with tributes being paid to him from across the industry.

Adams worked as a creative retoucher and print colour specialist for the commercial printer from 2013, collaborating with artists, designers, and publishers to maximise the aesthetic appeal of printed projects.

Adams started his career at Reflex, before moving on to Icon Colour in 1995. He worked at Icon for 17 years, rising all the way up to the role of general manager before moving to Pureprint when Icon closed in 2012.

In its tribute to Adams, Pureprint described him as “thoughtful, calm, and quietly brilliant,” saying: “He made a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of working with him.

“Whether you knew him well or just in passing, you felt better for having spoken to him.”

Purpeprint has described being overwhelmed by the messages shared in the weeks since his passing, with clients, colleagues, friends, and suppliers all speaking of his warmth, professionalism, and generosity.

One tribute to Adams described that he “gave images life on the printed page,” with another characterising him as “the best colour specialist I have worked with.” Several tributes also said that some of their finest books simply “wouldn’t have been possible without Sam’s involvement.”

Pureprint’s tribute describes Adams’ deep love of sailing

Lady Henrietta Pearson of Addison Publications, who worked closely with Adams on many projects, says of collaborating with him: “Sam was involved with all Addison Publications’ major projects, starting with the Highgrove Florilegium in 2007 when Icon was within the Westerham Press building at Edenbridge.

“We followed Sam to Pureprint where he prepared each of the Transylvania Florilegium watercolour paintings for printing. It is such a joy to show the finished books to queues of people who really do appreciate the quality and cannot believe they are looking at prints and not the originals.”

Summing up her feelings on working with Adams, Pearson adds: “We constantly realise that what we show with great pride is only there because of the skills of others. Sam has played a major part in our publishing adventure."

Reflecting on the character of Adams, Pureprint describes his deep love of sailing, with him often speaking about time on the water, planning trips, and working on the boat.

Pureprint’s tribute reads: “Sam leaves behind his beloved family, who he spoke of often and with great pride. Our thoughts and condolences are with them, and with all of Sam’s friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

“Sam will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know and work with him. We’re grateful for the time we had, and he will be remembered with huge respect and deep affection.”

The funeral service for Sam Adams was held on July 30th, 2025.
