Member of Parliament (MP) David Burton-Sampson visited Formara Print & Marketing last week (October 24th), providing an opportunity for the commercial printer to discuss a range of important topics for its local community.

Formara, based at Temple Farm Business Park in Southend-On-Sea, employs 28 people and has been operating for 54 years, reportedly making it the region’s oldest continually operating print company.

Burton-Sampson, the Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, met with Formara’s managing director, Andy Pond, and marketing and PR executive, Russ Turner, discussing topics including sustainability, apprenticeships, education, and how to inspire the next generation into the print industry.

Commenting on the visit, Pond says: “It was a real pleasure to welcome David and [parliamentary assistant] Matilda to Formara and to have an open, forward-thinking conversation about the local economy and the future of print.

“We talked about the challenges and opportunities facing businesses like ours, from sustainability to skills development, and the importance of nurturing new talent through apprenticeships. David showed enthusiasm for helping local employers thrive and a genuine interest in Formara's future investment plans and employment strategy.”

Pond, who was appointed to the role of managing director of Formara in 2023, started as a trainee at the company in 1988.

During the visit, Burton-Sampson was also given a tour of the company’s facilities, including its modern digital and litho presses, gaining insight into how a contemporary print business operates and contributes to both local and national economies.

Discussing the impact of the MP’s visit, Turner adds: “It was a really positive conversation that touched on everything from sustainability to skills development.

“David’s genuine interest in how we operate and his enthusiasm for supporting local enterprise really stood out. It’s great to see a local MP who truly understands the value of Southend’s business community.”

In a recent exclusive feature for Print Monthly, Formara discussed how the company has evolved since its founding in 1972 and what it offers today.

A reported turnover of roughly £3.6m in 2024 led to Formara investing in a new website, additional sustainable printing capabilities, and a data-driven direct mail offering.
