Canon has launched its first large-format roll-to-roll printer that is modular in speed and media handling
Canon has launched its new Colorado M-series, two roll-to-roll large-format graphics printers that are modular in speed configuration and media handling.
Described by the manufacturer as the “fastest and most productive solution in its market segment”, the range offers special effects and white ink printing capabilities.
The scalable nature of the range means users can choose from various output speeds with the Colorado M3 offering a cruising speed of 29m2 per hour and maximum print speeds of 111m2 per hour, and the M5 offering 40m2 per hour and maximum print speeds of 159m2 per hour.
Both models have the option to be upgraded from one speed to the other temporarily for production peaks, or permanently. Both printers can also be upgraded with Canon’s new UVgel white ink option to M3W and M5W models, as well as be equipped with FLXfinish+ matte/gloss inks for CMYK prints.
With the addition of the new Canon UVgel white ink, users can produce a broader range of applications such as window graphics, labels, and wallpaper. This coupled with new media detection sensor technology means the machines will enable users to expand their typical product offering to substrates that are structured, transparent, reflective, or magnetic.
The benefit of the UVgel ink, Canon explains, is that it builds up dense and opaque images quickly using white ink in fewer passes than conventional printing technologies with the printed output maintaining its original whiteness over time.
The use of UVgel also reduces downtime caused by common issues such as nozzle-cleaning and maintenance issues associated with white ink. This is because UVgel technology consumes up to 40% less ink to build up the same image quality.

“On top of these business-critical performance criteria, large-format graphics providers today want to make smart, environmentally responsible investments in printing solutions that can evolve with them and help them tap into lucrative creative applications, products, and growth markets.”

The new Colorado M-series is available through accredited partners and through Canon’s direct sales channels.
