The manufacturer of inks and coatings is celebrating its history as a family-owned business

Siegwerk, a global provider of printing inks and coatings for use within packaging and labels, is celebrating its roots as a family-owned business which started in Siegburg, Germany.
The company, which is now in its sixth generation of ownership, is using the motto “Let’s celebrate” in order to mark its 200 years of evolution in 2024.
The current owners have acknowledged its decades of innovation and transformation which has allowed the company to understand trends and the importance of change.
Established in 1824 as a retailer of manufactured goods, the German family-owned company entered the printing industry not too long after its inception.
After opening a calico (cotton fabric) print store the company went on to be one of the first illustration rotogravure print stores in Germany before becoming a fully automated ink production facility.
In 1911 Siegwerk Chemisches Laboratorium was founded as a specialist in the production of gravure inks and other graphic-used chemicals which gave the company the foundation to become Siegwerk as it is known today.
“From textile printing to publication gravure and finally packaging printing, by continuously looking for new ways to modernise production and innovate printing technologies, our family’s business has repeatedly succeeded in adopting new trends ahead of time and influencing the printing industry with essential innovations,” explains Alfred Keller, chairman of the Supervisory Board at Siegwerk.
Siegwerk says the corporate culture of the company is influenced by the its origin as a family business as values like responsibility, open-mindedness, foresight, and dedication are still preserved.
Keller says: “Then and now we remain strongly committed to making a positive and responsible contribution, not only to our employees and the communities we operate in, but also the society and the environment overall.”
The company is proud of its initiatives such as an in-house health insurance scheme in 1843 as well as financial support and social projects for children in need around the globe.
“The driving force behind everything we do has always been the passion to drive transformation and make a positive impact,” adds Keller. “When I see this passion in our family of Siegwerkers today, I am proud of the kind of company we have become and look forward to celebrating our 200-year journey with our almost 5,000 employees worldwide.”
The company remains committed to being family owned into its seventh generation and beyond and will hold events around the world for employees and their families throughout 2024.
