The event featured a programme of talks focused on the future of packaging

Packaging company, Parkside Flexibles, marked the beginning of Recycle Week by hosting an open day this Tuesday (October 15th), focusing on the future of circular flexible packaging.
The event, titled ‘Welcome to a Flexible Future’, saw Parkside open the doors of its Normanton headquarters to representatives from across the packaging sector as well as a range of consumer brands.
In addition to a networking lunch and a tour of Parkside’s flexible packaging production facilities, the event featured a programme of talks which aimed to offer insights and inspiration about the future of packaging.
Guest speakers included Dr Thomas Baker, plastics specialist at WRAP, who hosted a presentation on the industry’s journey towards complete film packaging circularity.
Olga Munroe of the Retail Institute spoke about how to achieve systemic change to benefit the future of packaging.
Paul Jenkins of ThePackHub also gave an overview of the latest packaging trends. Speaking during the event, Jenkins commented: “It’s been a hugely positive open house.
“There aren’t enough of these events taking place in my opinion. It’s been a valuable experience for all of us to see how it really works at the cutting edge of packaging development and to network with the people who are making it happen.”
The guest speaker lineup was completed by Ian Bates of Two Sides who delivered a presentation on the future of flexible paper packaging.
Several of the Parkside team also delivered talks with group sales director Paul McKeown explaining the history of Parkside’s 70 years in operation. Technical director Joshua Swann provided insights into Parkside’s technical capability and materials portfolio.
Julia O’Loughlin, group marketing manager at Parkside, says: “We pride ourselves on working at the cutting edge of packaging innovation. This forward-thinking presentation outlines our optimistic view of the future, and of packaging’s place in a truly circular economy.”
Parkside recently received a World Coffee Innovation Award for a compostable coffee pouch it made in collaboration with coffee brand, Dark Woods Coffee. The pouch is made from a home compostable flexible laminate and an industrially compostable CO2 valve, allowing it to completely degrade within compost.
