The shortlist for the 2024 British Book Design and Production Awards has been announced.

The Awards, run by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) alongside Oxford Brookes University and creative agency BookMachine, is designed to showcase the quality of the British book design and production industries.

Industry experts from a range of disciplines, such as design, publishing, production, and retail judged the entries, with a shortlist chosen for 17 separate categories.

The 2024 awards will be presented on January 29th, 2025, at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. All books published between July 1st 2023 and August 1st 2024 were eligible for entry into the awards, as long as they have been published, designed, or printed in the UK.

There is also an award for the ‘Best Student Book’. The award offers students the chance to have their work seen by leading industry professionals. It provides the winner with £500 and a short internship with a leading designer, publisher, or printer.

Among the shortlist in the Best British Book category is a numbered edition of classic sci-fi novel ‘Frozen Hell’ by fine press publisher Areté Editions.

The numbered edition was limited to 300 copies for sale. It is fully bound in baby blue lambskin nappa leather and is foil blocked in four passes in white and black, creating a snowstorm design across the front and back boards with the title on the spine.

The binding has a square spine with a wide groove between spine and boards, allowing the covers to open freely.

Among the nominations in the Photographic Books category is ‘Deborah Turbeville: Photocollage’, released by Thames & Hudson. The publication presents the work of the titular fashion photographer. Built upon extensive research by Nathalie Herschdorfer in collaboration with the MUUS Collection, the book includes many images that are published for the first time.

In the Graphic Novels category, ‘Single Mothering’ by Anna Härmälä is among the nominations. The semi-autobiographical publication, written and illustrated by Härmälä and published by Flying Eye Books, portrays the ups and downs of single parenthood.

The shortlist comes after the deadline for the awards was extended to September 13th. A full list of shortlisted entries is available on the British Book Awards website.
