The first commercial printing press in London was set up in the churchyard of St Bride’s in the year 1500, beginning a long association with St Bride’s and printers

The festive season is being celebrated with the return of ‘Carols For Printers’, a Christmas carol service for the printing industry.

The free yearly event is hosted by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), alongside the Graphics and Print Media Alliance (GPMA), JICMAIL, Picon, The Printing Charity, St Bride Foundation, and Unite.

The 6pm carol service will be held on Wednesday December 11th at St Bride’s Church in London.

A series of readings from the Nativity will be read out by printing industry representatives during the service. The St Bride’s choir, along with the congregation, will sing both traditional and modern versions of Christmas carols.

The service will be followed by festive food and drinks at the nearby Bridewell Hall from 7pm until 9pm, hosted by the St Bride Foundation.

Registration for the event is free, although places are limited. Those wishing to find out more information or register their attendance have been encouraged to contact BPIF marketing executive Heena Bulsara at heena.bulsara@bpif.org.uk

The last few months have been busy for the printing trade organisation. In November, the BPIF co-hosted the Power of Print seminar alongside print and paper advocacy group, Two Sides.

The seminar brought together leaders from the print, paper, publishing, packaging, and media industries to discuss the current market challenges and opportunities.

The BPIF also recently released its Q4 Outlook report, revealing that growth in output and orders ramped in Q3.

The association says that the industry experienced a delayed recovery following a drop in output in Q2 which had been expected to come through earlier in the year. A similar pace of growth is now expected to continue into Q4 despite businesses being required to make adjustments following the government's recent Budget announcements.

The organisation is also hosting the 2024 British Book Design and Production Awards on January 29th 2025. The Awards, run by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) alongside Oxford Brookes University and creative agency, BookMachine, is designed to showcase the quality of the British book design and production industries.

The shortlist for the awards was announced in October, spanning 18 categories including Best British Book, Best Jacket/Cover Design, and Book of the Year.
