A major fire broke out at a toner recycling facility in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, with six reported injured.

The fire broke out on Tuesday April 1st at the toner recycling site of Moock Environmental Solutions in the Blairlinn Industrial Estate in Cumbernauld.

Six fire engines, six ambulances, a trauma team, and a rapid response unit were reportedly involved in the operation to stop the fire and assist those affected.

The Scottish Ambulance Service took six casualties to hospital, with two remaining overnight to be treated for burns. The other four were treated for smoke inhalation before being discharged.

During the time of the incident, police asked locals to stay indoors and keep their windows closed, with a number of neighbouring businesses evacuated.

Speaking on LinkedIn after the fire, Moock Environmental Solutions said: “We are extremely grateful to the Scottish Fire and Rescue service and the Scottish Ambulance service for their swift and professional response.

“All staff evacuated the building safety, two team members remain under observation in hospital for minor injuries. We are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation and prioritise the safety of our employees and all those affected. We are also deeply thankful for the support received from our neighbours, customers, and partners.”

Moock Environmental Solutions’ toner recycling service involves breaking down the cartridges into their component parts of metal and plastic. The granulated plastic is re-used for applications including outside decking. The recovered toner powder is reportedly turned into a pigment to be used in concrete bricks.

An investigation is currently under way to establish the cause of the fire. Print Monthly will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as and when they become available.
