A Bristol university has announced a new event focusing on paper for heritage and traditional printmaking

The Centre for Print Research at the University of West England (UWE) has announced a one-day Paper Symposium on January 27th, 2026, focusing on paper for heritage and traditional printmaking.
The event, which will be run in collaboration with heritage papermaker, St Cuthberts Mill, will bring together a range of experts and enthusiasts in paper and print.
Speakers at the event will include Michael Craine of Cranfield Colours, and UWE’s professor Steve Hoskins, both of which will explore a range of inks for different forms of printmaking, and look at what is needed to get inks to dry.
Professor Carinna Parraman, also from UWE, will demonstrate how different print processes and paper appear under magnification, with the segment sponsored by Nikon Metrology UK.
Parraman will also talk with marketing executive Catherine Frood, technical manager Nicola Dobson, quality manager Lee Hasemore, and technical assistant Emily Vincent, all from St Cuthberts Mill, about how the company makes its fine art paper.
The symposium will also include demonstrations of techniques including stone lithography and etching, a workshop with UWE’s master printer, Laura Clarke, and a materials showcase from John Purcell Paper.
The event takes place on January 27th, with the last booking date for the event being January 20th. Tickets to the Paper Symposium will include lunch, refreshments, and a gift bag of printmaking paper samples.
