Material solutions manufacturer, UPM, has announced that its speciality papers division will invest over €10m (£8.4m) in the modernisation of its Tervasaari mill in Valkeakoski, Finland.

The investment aims to allow UPM Specialty Papers to boost capacity and improve production stability in its specialised products, such as glassines and flexible packaging papers.

The Tervasaari mill has a current capacity of 300,000tpa of glassine papers and packaging papers, employing over 300 people.

The modernisation project, which is expected to be completed at the end of 2026, will include a rebuild of the mill’s paper machine drying section and the upgrade of its steam system upgrade.

UPM has also invested approximately €20m (£16.8m) in boosting the energy efficiency of the Tervasaari mill in recent years, including the installation of a new electric boiler in 2023.

Earlier this year, UPM Raflatac announced that it will include the energy, water, and CO2 footprint data of its products directly in all its customer quotes in a reported first for the label industry.

The product footprints, known as product passport prototypes (PPPs), aim to provide customers with transparent environmental data, helping them to make informed material choices and to reduce their Scope 3 emissions.

The company operates globally, employing approximately 15,800 people worldwide, with reported annual sales of approximately €10.3bn (£8.69bn). UPM is the only paper company which is listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a family of global benchmarks that assess the sustainability performance of publicly traded companies.
