Commercial printer, ThreeFiveFour, has purchased a remarketed 2017 Speedmaster CX 102-5+L directly from HEIDELBERG, with the printer reportedly doubling its capacity and halving print times

Essex-based commercial print specialist, ThreeFiveFour, has expanded its production capabilities with the installation of a HEIDELBERG Speedmaster CX 102-5+L.
ThreeFiveFour chose the 2017 model of the CX 102-5+L, remarketed and supplied directly by HEIDELBERG through its remarketed equipment programme. The investment will reportedly double the company’s printing capacity through the efficiency improvements it provides.
Speaking about the purchase, Ian Drew, director at ThreeFiveFour, says: “We invested in the CX 102-5+L so that we could offer more to our clients and effectively double our printing capacity.
“Despite being a 2017 machine, it had every level of automation available including Push to Stop technology and had only completed 90 million impressions. It was an offer we simply couldn’t refuse.”
The 2017 generation remains highly sought after in the used equipment market, offering five printing units and a dedicated coating unit with an anilox roller system. The press boasts a maximum production speed of 16,500 sheets per hour, with maximum sheet size of 720mm × 1,020mm.
The installation marks a major milestone in ThreeFiveFour’s growth strategy, allowing the business to scale output without proportionally increasing labour or production time.
The company has outlined that the new press allows customers to benefit from cheaper pricing, speedier production, and greater capacity.
Drew continues: “The productivity gains are significant. We expect the machine to give us 100% more productivity. We are currently running in half the time, with half the number of minders, while achieving the same turnover – purely because of the efficiencies built into the machine itself.”
HEIDELBERG’s remarketed equipment programme is designed to give customers access to expertly refurbished pre-owned presses, backed directly by the manufacturer.
Although ThreeFiveFour had previously explored pre-owned equipment through dealers, the complexity and sophistication of the CX 102-5+L made them decide that direct manufacturer support was a critical factor in the purchasing decision.
Drew adds: “We have worked with dealers before and they have been very good, but the level of technology on this press meant that as a business, we needed the backup of the manufacturer.”
HEIDELBERG recently purchased the global service and spare parts business of print press manufacturer, Manroland Sheetfed, following Manroland’s declaration of insolvency and the closure of its manufacturing operations.
As part of the planned transaction, HEIDELBERG will take over Manroland’s global service and spare parts business, including related intellectual property, market organisations in around 35 countries, selected assets, and approximately 600 employees. HEIDELBERG will also secure the intellectual property relating to the Roland 900/Cartonmaster wide-format press.
The deal aims to allow current customers to receive support from existing local contacts, while gaining access to HEIDELBERG’s global service network, spare parts infrastructure, and lifecycle offering.
