Packaging manufacturer, Coveris, has completed a €9.5m (£8.2m) investment at its plant in Halle, Germany, including upgrades to its machine capacity and infrastructure.

Improvements include the purchase of a new cast film extrusion line, which has entered full production following successful material qualification.

The new line strengthens the site’s flexibility in material development, with the goal of supporting the production of customised, future-ready packaging solutions, particularly focusing on recyclable monofilms for thermoforming and medical applications.

A Rotomec gravure printing press has also completed its testing phase and is now fully operational. This press was purchased to increase printing speed and reliability, boosting the production of premium packaging with improved consistency and turnaround times.

Additionally, a newly constructed warehouse has been added, optimising internal logistics and significantly expanding on-site storage. The facility was developed to enable more efficient workflows and material handling, as well as improved delivery performance.

Coveris describes the site upgrades as a “strategic milestone for the future” which strengthens its portfolio of sustainable monofilm solutions, improves delivery times, and elevates its rotoprinting strengths to a new level.

Coveris says: “With all works now finalised, the site now stands as a benchmark for innovation and operational excellence in flexible packaging. The investment is part of Coveris’ broader mission to future-proof its manufacturing network and deliver value through smart, sustainable growth.”

Coveris also recently achieved what it has labelled as “record-breaking” EcoVadis sustainability ratings.

The EcoVadis rating reflects a company's sustainability management system at the time of assessment, ranging from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better performance.

Nearly 60% of sites within Coveris Group are now covered by the EcoVadis Platinum score, placing the company among the top 1% of over 130,000 rated companies worldwide. An additional 30% of sites are also covered by a Gold EcoVadis medal.

As well as introducing a range of new sustainable packaging solutions, Coveris’ sustainable focus has included creating data-driven environmental targets and taking steps towards delivering on its ongoing commitment to becoming a ‘no waste’ company.

This work lead to Coveris receiving a host of awards at this year’s Environmental Packaging Awards (EPA), including the Gold Award for Sustainable Packaging Business of the Year.

Coveris was also recently named a finalist in the Packaging Europe Sustainability Awards in the ‘Best Practice’ category, for the role of its ReCover Paper recycling facility. Winners of the awards will be announced this November at the Sustainable Packaging Summit in Utrecht, Netherlands.
