A social enterprise established by Commercial, a business services group that provides clients with the likes of office supplies, technology, and print management services, has been awarded B Corp status.

The enterprise known as Commercial Foundation was established to give a second chance to young adults aged 16 to 25 who had previous barriers to finding work or education.

Young adults will undertake print work including digital and wide-format printing, branded and promotional merchandise, as well as office supplies, all made with a stringent quality process.

The Foundation’s latest achievement is being awarded B Corp certification by B Lab UK, a certification company that creates standards, policies, and tools for businesses.

B Corp status is awarded to organisations which meet rigorous social and environmental standards, with goals being outside of simply profits to shareholders.

Commercial Foundation is based in Cheltenham and has helped more than 130 young adults gain essential skills and self-confidence through its #NoLimits employability programme.

Print Monthly spoke to co-founder of the foundation, and managing director of Commercial Group, Simone Hindmarch, about the B Corp certification, and the change Commercial Foundation is trying to instil.

Hindmarch told Print Monthly: “As the workplace is changing, to set up a part of your business that is giving back to the community, is incredibly important to that organisation.”

Commercial Foundation is now one of around 1,000 B Corp registered companies in the UK, as its commitment to pursuing purpose ahead of profit has been rewarded. The certification addresses five key impact areas: Governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.

Adam Miller, director of the Commercial Foundation, says: “It really is an honour to be awarded B Corp status, it is a wonderful reflection of the work our team does.

“We are committed to sustainability, accountability, and transparency and believe we are somewhat unique in the social value sector in producing high-quality products and transforming lives too.”

Chris Turner, executive director of B Lab UK, adds: “We, and the rest of the B Corp community, are pleased to support Commercial Foundation in paving the way for a new way of doing things.

“Its commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to others and really help spread the idea that we can redefine success in business to be as much about people and planet as it is about profit.”
