Baker Labels has installed the UK’s first Durst Tau G3 Peak LED at its Brentwood headquarters with the aim of significantly increasing digital inkjet capacity as the company continues to invest in the growth of its label business.

Tom Baker, head of finance and development at Bakers, and technical manager, Jamie Godson, travelled to Durst’s headquarters in Brixen, Italy, earlier this year to see the G3 technology in operation before agreeing the investment.

The new 510mm-wide press was delivered in late August, with installation completed by Durst engineers within three days. Trials, profiling, and operator training followed, before the first live customer work moved onto the machine.

The G3 Peak joins Baker Labels’ existing Durst Tau RSC 340 LED which was installed in October 2024, reportedly giving the company well over double its previous production capacity on the Durst platform.

As well as representing a commitment to the continued growth of its core label operation, Bakers chose the machine to maintain and further improve its quality, agility, and turnaround times.

Tom Baker says: “There has been a lot of investment and growth across Bakers over recent years, but labels remain right at the heart of the business. We are seeing plenty of opportunity for continued growth in that side of the company and we need to make sure the production capability is there to support it.

“The new press gives us considerably more capacity and resilience, but just as importantly, it gives the label team the technology to keep improving the way we produce work for our customers.”

The Tau G3 Peak runs at calculated speeds of up to 79m/min across all colours and has been specified with double white ink configuration, Hawk AI cloud-based software, and Material Edge Protection quality control.

The Durst Imaging System used by the press utilises three cameras to monitor the web and can automate material calibration, with the aim of improving consistency and quality in everyday production.

Hawk AI supports automatic nozzle compensation and colour registration, while Material Edge Protection is designed to reduce the risk of the substrate edge coming into contact with the printheads.

Explaining the technologies that the G3 offers, Jamie Godson, technical manager at Baker Labels, says: “The G3 Peak is the next step in the evolution of the Durst Tau platform that we’ve been using over the past few years.

“It’s difficult to isolate one feature and say that is the most important. The real strength is the collective package and the agility it gives us to deal with the changing requirements we see from day to day."

The new press was also chosen for the straightforward transition it offered to the Bakers team, with the core operating principles already familiar due to their existing use of the Durst RSC 340.

Godson adds: “The RSC 340 had already set a high bar. I’m happy that the G3 hits the same levels and the additional upgrades all work as advertised.”

Baker Labels has invested over £1m in charitable donations since 2011

BakPac, the flexible packaging division of Bakers, also recently announced the installation of two new TOTANI automatic spout inserters.

The investment, reportedly worth more than £500k, was undertaken to add significant capability for custom printed spouted pouches, and strengthen BakPac’s position in the growing refill and liquid pouch market.

Both TOTANI machines are now installed and running live customer work, with further trials, testing, and operator training continuing as the team builds up production.

Alongside its recent kit investments, Bakers also passed a significant milestone in its support for charities and good causes, with more than £1m donated since the company moved to Brentwood in 2011.

During that time, Bakers has supported more than 100 different charities, community organisations, and other causes. In 2026 alone, the company is supporting more than 50 different organisations and causes.
