During Love Paper week, taking place in February of next year, industry members will be called on to collectively champion paper to consumers and businesses
Premier Paper Group and Antalis have both hosted tree planting days across the UK
Paper and board supplier, Premier Paper Group, has marked a significant milestone in its work to combat climate change by planting trees at a former golf course.
Working in collaboration with the Woodland Trust, a total of 100 of Premier’s customers and employees took to Frodsham golf course in north Cheshire to plant around 3,000 native saplings which will one day blossom into a forest.
This tree planting day was in line with Premier’s tree planting initiative Carbon Capture which demonstrates the company’s commitment to providing sustainable solutions for excess Co2 emissions within the industry.
Through the Carbon Capture initiative, Premier is contributing to the UK’s ‘net zero by 2050’ target by ensuring that 100% of all charges go directly to the Woodland Trust’s work.
According to Premier, tree cover in Merseyside and Cheshire is below the national average. The Carbon Capture initiative will enable the Frodsham site to be transformed into native broadleaf woodland and therefore contribute to the growth of The Merseyside Forest and the larger Northern Forest.
To date, Premier’s Carbon Capture program has created over 3 million square metres of new native woodland in the UK, which equates to 107,571 tonnes of CO2e to be mitigated.
Hussein Ismail, sustainable business director at Premier Paper Group, commented on the day: “Carbon Capture isn’t just a logo on print, it’s helping people connect with, and give back to, nature through the Woodland Trust.
“These tree planting events are always well attended and a time for like-minded people in the industry to get together and enjoy the fresh air.”
Antalis, which has worked with Forest Carbon since 2014, also recently held a tree planting day at The Croft on the Lowther Estate in Penrith, Cumbria.
Customers Coventry Building Society, Egan Reid, and The Printroom took part in the day which saw the planting of a native oak to join the 9,000-plus broadleaf and coniferous trees Antalis and its customers have already planted on the six-hectare site.
This planting has been done as part of the carbon offsetting scheme offered by Antalis in partnership with Forest Carbon with The Croft one of four schemes being supported by the initiative. Alongside The Croft, 4,000 native broadleaf trees have been planted on a 2.5 hectare site at Thorney Coppice near Kettering which has resulted in 1,000 tonnes of CO2 captured.
In addition to this, 31,557 broadleaf and coniferous trees have been planted on a 16-hectare site at Doddington North near Wooler, Northumberland, resulting in a further 4,308 tonnes of CO2 captured.
Further afield from the UK, Antalis has also worked with Forest Carbon to support the restoration of over 2,000 hectares of degraded and over-farmed land in Guatamala. This also created over 300 jobs in low access communities.
To date, Antalis and its customers have planted around 50,000 trees and restored 30 hectares of ecosystem whilst capturing over 9,000 tonnes of CO2.
Matthew Botfield, sustainability manager of Antalis, comments: “Our partnership with Forest Carbon helps us provide our customers with a quality assured and transparent means of contributing to nature-based carbon reduction projects – offering a way of addressing the carbon generated through the manufacture and delivery of the wide range of Antalis products they use.
“Together, we’re helping to restore indigenous woodland and biodiversity, which in turn supports flood mitigation and soil and water protection. Customers also have peace of mind that Forest Carbon’s projects are certified under the UK Government’s Woodland Carbon Code.”
