According to a publication by Kyocera Document Solutions UK, updating Windows 11 may cause loss of functionality and security vulnerabilities for printers

Updating to the Windows 11 operating system (OS) may cause driver compatibility issues, loss of functionality, and security vulnerabilities for print technology, according to print and IT solutions firm, Kyocera Document Solutions UK.
Windows 11 is the latest major release of Microsoft's Windows OS, released in October 2021 as the successor to Windows 10, which was released in 2015.
With support for Windows 10 due to end on October 14th, 2025, many businesses are already in the process of moving over to Windows 11. Recent research cited by Kyocera has shown that between September 2024 and January 2025, Windows 10’s presence in business organisations decreased from roughly 67% to 60%, while Windows 11 grew from 23% to 30% in the same period.
In a publication by the company, Kyocera warns that despite the many benefits the new OS may bring to businesses, there are some risks to print devices that companies should be aware of before switching.
Among the issues highlighted are potential driver compatibility issues. Steve Pearce, group head of marketing at Kyocera Document Solutions UK, says: “Windows 11 may not support some older printer drivers, which can lead to functionality problems, or printers not working at all.
“It’s important to double-check this before the changeover, as it is an area that is often forgotten. If your print devices go down, your IT help desk is sure to light up, so getting your drivers in order should be a priority.”
Pearce also asserts that, as with all OS upgrades, there is a potential for loss of functionality of both hardware and software, especially when using older technology. Some features of a printer might not be fully supported after the upgrade, which can lead to reduced functionality overall.
Pearce comments: “We have heard a number of issues being reported in this area, so it’s a good idea to check by printing a small number of pages immediately after the switchover, before hitting CTRL+P on the company invoice run. This way, you can tackle any problems without wasting valuable resources.”
Security vulnerabilities are another potential risk when upgrading to Windows 11, according to the report. If a printer relies on outdated drivers or firmware, it could become a significant security risk, as these will not receive necessary updates following the upgrade.
According to Pearce, any unsecured endpoint can present a major problem to the whole business in the event of a cyberattack. He advises: “Check with your print supplier that drivers and firmware are up to date, and that future updates will reach your devices after the change to Windows 11. This will ensure you and your data remain secure.”
Among the other potential issues cited in Kyocera’s publication are potential incompatibility with print software as well as network connectivity issues.
Pearce concludes by saying: “When making the move to Windows 11, be sure not to forget about print. Paper cuts are painful after all.”
Among the reported benefits of Windows 11 in comparison to 10 are a more robust security system designed to mitigate security risks for hybrid workers. Windows 11 is also designed to deliver an improved user experience, including a redesigned start menu which can handle multiple virtual desktops.
